New baby gift guide
It’s estimated that around 350,000 babies are born around the world each and every day, and nearly 700,000 born in the UK each year. It is customary in many parts of the world to celebrate the new arrival with the giving of gifts, and with this many babies being born, that’s a lot of gifts being given. Whether it be a new baby in the family, or a friend celebrating their new arrival, it’s sometimes difficult to know where to start on the gift giving front; is it a boy or a girl? Do you buy something practical or sentimental? Have you already bought a Baby Shower gift? The list of goes on…
With all of this in mind, we thought we’d see if we could take some inspiration from across the globe. What are the customs and traditions elsewhere that may inspire our baby gift buying in future…
In Australia, babies are given Dreamtime children’s storybooks telling tales taken from Aboriginal mythology. The stories represent traditional cultural values and beliefs and relationships between people, land and animals.
In Brazil, it is tradition for new babies to leave hospital wearing knitted red shoes to bring them good luck, and protect them from ‘evil eyes’ at the start of their new lives.
The ‘evil eye’ is also prevalent in Egyptian culture, where it is tradition to give new babies a palm plant and a blue eye, usually attached to their clothing, to protect them from evil.
In Russia, babies are given a silver spoon, which is thought to bring wealth and good luck to their future.
And the silver theme also carries good sentiments in India where it is believed that silver represents strength. Baby girls are given silver ankle bracelets when they are born which is said to ensure that the baby will grow up to be strong and healthy.
In Japan and China it is more common for parents to receive money on the birth of their baby rather than to be given a physical gift. In China, the money is traditionally given in a red envelope with the words “fortune” or “luck” written on it, which is thought to bring great joy and wealth to their life.
A little closer to home, we have some beautiful baby gifts which are sure to go down well with any new parents, and remember that we can wrap them all with pink or blue new baby ribbon for that extra special touch…
